The quest of Ian MacTruan and Scathach reaches its terrifying climax on the hill called Golgotha in Judea. Crulach, using Pontius Pilate as a puppet, makes sure the carpenter is crucified, but also recognizes that a new power, a power greater than his own, has entered the game, and he begins to worry. The remaining Brothers of The One True God flee the Holy Land with a new leader and hope for a better future.
At the same time, the Roman Emperor, Nero, has been completely subverted by the High Priest of Graxas, the paladin of the Dark Angeal, Dorcada- the Bas Crulach. Crulach works to use the Legions of Rome to mask his true intention-the destruction of the Four- the representatives of the four Angeals of Light. Nero becomes the perfect useless idiot to further Crulach’s plans, when Crulach convinces Nero that the Druids of Britannia are a serious threat to Rome and to Nero’s life. Nero gives Crulach complete control of the military and the invasion of Britannia. Now Crulach has all he needs to find and destroy the Four, which he knows will resist him as he closes in on the holy Druid stronghold of Mona.
While Crulach works his plan, the new members of the reconstituted Four are found by their Angeals and, unknowingly, work their way through the dangers of the Roman empire towards their reunion and fate. Whether they will find each other in time for the last confrontation is in doubt. The Dark Angeal, Dorcada, has stolen a march on his eternal adversaries, the four Angeals of Light, and victory on Terra seems all but assured.
As the forces of Light and Dark coalesce, the soul/mind of Terra, Mother, again recognizes the threat that put her in so much danger during the days of Athlan’s supremacy. To Mother, it doesn’t matter who wins the battle for her planet. Whether it be the forces of Light or Dark, she will lose herself, and her planet, whoever wins, and this she will not abide. Consequently, as she did by creating Celine to fight for her on ancient Athlan, she creates new warriors from the dead of the past to defend her free existence.
Celine, a human woman converted by Mother to be her protégé, also recognizes the signs of conflict that are developing in the West. Truth be told, Celine won the battle of Athlan for Mother, but she is now out of favor with her creator because she showed mercy to a young man who became a member of the Four. Now, Celine realizes that Mother has shut her out of her plans for Terra during the coming conflict. Celine worries that Mother may decide to dispense with her as untrustworthy and, therefore, unnecessary. Still loyal to Mother, Celine must consider how she can protect herself, Mother, and the Druids that worship her as a goddess- not an easy problem to solve.
